Bret Kofford joined the University of Arizona in 2024. Prior to that, he was a full-time lecturer at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley, retiring after 26 years and being awarded emeritus status upon retirement. Kofford taught for the English, Rhetoric and Writing Studies, Film, Liberal Studies, History and Ethnic Studies departments.

Kofford is a screenwriter, with two feature films, two short films, and two television episodes produced. Before going full-time into academia, Kofford was a writer, editor and columnist for daily newspapers for more than 20 years. He still writes a weekly column for the Imperial Valley Press in California, and has won many awards for his screenwriting and column writing.

Kofford earned his bachelor’s degree in Radio-Television from California State University, Fresno and his master’s degree in journalism from the University of Georgia.
