Why did you choose this internship?
I chose this internship primarily because it fit into my busy academic schedule. Since this internship was a hybrid experience, I was able to still be enrolled in school full-time and manage my internship responsibilities outside of that time. This internship was with my family’s company, which I have had prior experience working for, so that further aided my ability to learn best business practices quickly and complete my work more efficiently.
What kind of work did you do throughout your internship experience?
I supported the administrative side of the business. My responsibilities ranged from payroll services, electronic invoice filing, employee communication, and even event planning. I felt at ease with these responsibilities as I have previously done this type of work before, but never for an extended period of time or with the caseload of administration that I had this fall.
What new skills did you develop in this internship?
I further honed my technical skills in data management which included entering and interpreting data in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel to process payroll and pay invoices to suppliers. I also learned how to manage employee relationships through effective communication if there were questions about their paychecks. I also learned lessons in how to work with family in a business setting. Working with family is very satisfying when everything is going well, but it can also impact relationships when things don’t go the way we intend them to. I learned how it can be both challenging and rewarding navigating a work setting with family.
What was your favorite part of your internship?
My favorite part of the internship was the fact that I was able to show my parents the skills I had learned here at the University of Arizona. I have an emphasis in Business Administration so this internship went hand in hand with what I learned in those classes. My parents were proud of the work I had done, especially because I hadn’t worked in the office with them before. It was amazing to see my parents so impressed with my work.
