Zoey Block developed her own tech start-up specializing in e-commerce customer support.
Describe your internship experience.
With a couple of collaborators, I started a tech start-up called Uchati. Together, we researched and developed our business plan, created and designed our website, secured partnerships, met with potential clients, and managed our finances. I also worked on expanding our services to include consulting and catering to restaurants in addition to e-commerce stores.
One of the biggest projects that I worked on during my internship was the development and launch of our consulting services. This involved conducting market research, creating a business plan, and developing marketing strategies to promote our new services. I learned how to balance all of the different aspects of the business, from marketing to finance to customer relations. I learned that effective time management and delegation are key to running a successful business.
What made my internship experience unique was that I was not interning for an established company but instead was starting my own with some collaborators. This meant that I had the opportunity to be involved in every aspect of the business from the ground up, which was a valuable learning experience. I developed a variety of skills that will be transferable to any future career, such as leadership, project management, marketing, and financial management. I also learned how to navigate the start-up world and gained valuable experience in entrepreneurship.
How did your Applied Humanities major coursework help prepare you for the internship experience?
My Applied Humanities degree provided me with valuable critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills that were crucial to the success of my business. My coursework also helped me develop a strong sense of empathy and understanding for the needs and perspectives of others, which was important when it came to working with potential clients and partners. It also helped me to think creatively and outside of the box, which was necessary in order to develop innovative solutions for our business.
How has your internship experience influenced your plans for your future?
My internship experience gave me invaluable skills and knowledge that I will carry with me throughout my career. My favorite part was seeing our business grow and develop over time. It was incredibly satisfying to see our hard work pay off and to know that we were making a difference in the lives of our clients and customers. It solidified my desire to work in the tech industry and has given me the confidence to pursue my entrepreneurial goals. It also helped me to develop a strong sense of self-confidence and resilience, which will be important as I continue to pursue my goal of starting my own successful tech company.
What advice do you have for other students as they begin their internship?
Don't be afraid to ask questions or suggest new ideas. Make sure to communicate with your colleagues and clients, and be open to feedback and constructive criticism. Try to make the most of every opportunity and challenge that comes your way, as each experience can help you grow and develop both personally and professionally.
