Michelle Toom interned with Kevlar Rose, a creative talent agency, and gained experience executing brand campaigns.

What new knowledge and skills did you develop in this internship?

Kevlar Rose is a modeling and creative talent agency that uses its influence to advocate for social justice issues. Through my internship, I developed skills related to brand campaigns, such as graphic design, web development, social media marketing, teamwork, and effective communication. You can see one of my projects here.

This internship helped to prepare me for a future job because I learned about the reality of a professional workforce. Before my internship, I was set on having a career in fashion since that is the emphasis of my degree. However, after my experience I learned that there are so many career options in the fashion industry that I would also like to consider, such as social media marketing, graphic design, or web development. I was also exposed to the many different components and skills it takes to run a successful business in which I will take with me if I ever want to start my own business in the future.

What advice do you have for other students as they search for or begin their internship?

I would advise other students to be patient when applying for internships and not to stress because the right one will come even if it takes time. I would also advise one to make as many connections as possible throughout college because you never know how someone will benefit you career wise in the future.

As for beginning an internship, I would advise a student to clarify communication expectations, especially if the internship is remote. Furthermore, establish with your boss how often they want to have meetings or updates and what form of communication is best for them.

How did your Applied Humanities major coursework help prepare you for the internship?

My courses in my Applied Humanities degree were partner or teamwork based which greatly benefited my internship experience because I already had strong collaboration and communication skills established from these courses. My courses also taught me about diverse backgrounds, personalities, and perspectives of people which helped me in my experience because I felt like I could understand and connect with others more effectively from this prior knowledge.
